John P. Cockey Papers, 1829-1833.

Letters sent to John P. Cockey of Baltimore, Maryland from George W. Gist and Marcus Y. Graff between 1829-1833 describe the field notes of George W. Gist on Hancock County and the development of Seneca County after removal of the Seneca Indians from their reservation. Lengthy descriptions of the Seneca lands include a freehand map of Seneca Reserve, hand colored and location lots as surveyed. The letter of December 6, 1829 contains a description of the trip from Baltimore on the new National Road, especially from Wheeling to Zanesville, Ohio.
